Mac Storage Tips
Free up space on your Mac — safely
A short guide to finding what’s eating your disk without deleting the wrong files. For everyday macOS users on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
1. See what’s using storage
Open System Settings → General → Storage (or About This Mac → Storage on older macOS). Review Recommendations, then check Applications, Documents, and System Data.
2. Clear safe caches
- Empty Trash and Downloads you no longer need
- In Mail, erase junk and large attachments
- Clear browser download leftovers — not saved passwords
3. Photos, iCloud, and duplicates
Enable Optimize Mac Storage for iCloud Photos if you use iCloud. Review Recently Deleted in Photos. Look for duplicate installers (.dmg) in Downloads.
4. When to use a cleanup tool
Manual cleanup is enough for most people. If you prefer a guided tool, choose software from a known publisher, read permissions carefully, and keep a Time Machine backup before bulk deletes.
